If you work in the automotive industry or North East, you will have come across the name ‘Mike Matthews’ for sure. Mike is the managing director of local automotive success Nifco UK, a role he has held since 2008 when he was acknowledged for leading the business from being a loss-making member of the Japanese owned Nifco INC, to one, which now turns over more than £78million.
Mike has dedicated his career of more than 30 years to the automotive industry, in which he began as an apprentice toolmaker before discovering a passion for sales and business development. Throughout his career, of which he has spent 29 years working for Nifco, he has constantly sought new challenges and ways to improve not only his own skillset but also the wider industry.
One of Mike’s proudest moments was seeing the idea of a North East Automotive industry cluster come to fruition in the form of the NEAA – and Mike was a massive contributor to this happening.
Mike said of the award: “It’s a real honour to be recognised by my peers at these awards, a first for the North East Automotive Alliance, and an event which was perfectly executed - celebrating long-servers like me, right through to the industry’s emerging talent in apprentices. The North East of England is home to a world class automotive sector, one which competes with the whole world – and these awards are not only a celebration of the people and businesses making this happen, but of the fantastic cluster of advanced manufacturers that are helping to put the North East on the map as a thriving automotive hub.”
The North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA) is established to support the economic sustainable growth and competitiveness of the automotive sector in the North East of England. The NEAA provides a single unified voice to key stakeholder groups and promotes the true value created by the region's automotive industry.
