University of Sunderland welcomes new commercial lead

The University of Sunderland has appointed a new deputy vice-chancellor (commercial) to lead its commercial agenda.

Professor Jon Timmis will join the university in May, taking responsibility for recruitment, marketing and communications, partnerships, philanthropy and alumni relations, and international activity.

Timmis is currently pro-vice-chancellor for partnerships and knowledge exchange at the University of York, where he leads development of new collaborations with partners and knowledge exchange activities. He maintains an active research profile and connections with industry. He is a principal investigator and co-investigator on Research Council UK funding applications, currently supervises a number of PhD students and teaches in the area of intelligent robotics.

Commenting on his appointment, Timmis said: "I’m thrilled to take up the role as deputy vice-chancellor (commercial) at the University of Sunderland. The university is going through an exciting transformation and I’m impressed by its plans and ambition.

“For me, universities are fantastic and exciting places, where research and teaching are delivered in an open and welcoming environment. The role of a university in our society is critical and I am thrilled to be joining Sunderland and looking forward to getting started."
