‘Building My Skills’, which recently received the Queens Award for Enterprise, is a year-long employability programme providing students in years nine and above a rounded introduction to the world of work through business engagement sessions as part of their timetabled curriculum.
Now in its 6th academic year Build My Skills is delivered by local and national businesses such as NRG, to show young people what different sectors are like to work in, what employers look for in interviews and applications providing them with practical experience of interviews.
This academic year, NRG has presented to over 400 North East students at Excelsior Academy Newcastle, Norham High School North Shields, Mortimer Community College South Shields, Emmanuel College Gateshead and Houghton Kepier School in Houghton-le-Spring; delivering over 300 student engagements hours in total.
NRG’s people development manager Samantha Turnbull said “It feels great to be involved in the Building My Skills project because we see it as making a real difference to the students. There was very little career advice when I was in high school so I went off to university not knowing what I wanted to do for a career. Through the Building My Skills project the students receive presentations from five different businesses over the academic year, culminating in a mock interview in the summer. I think this engagement with local businesses and their employees is invaluable and an alternative way of giving the students more options and advice when thinking about their futures.
