North East Automotive Alliance to Host First Automotive Expo Event in Sunderland

The North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA), a major new cluster group formed to promote and support the growth of the region’s key automotive industry, plans to host the first North East Automotive Expo on 24th September 2015.

The industry-led organisation, which brings together major names including Nissan, Nifco, Komatsu, Sevcon and Hyperdrive, will run the one-day event at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland. NEAA is delighted to confirm that Sunderland City Council, who already supports the cluster group, will be the Expo’s Main Sponsor, whilst Tees Valley Unlimited will join as Partner Sponsor. Confirmed keynote speakers to date include Lawrence Davies, Deputy CEO of the Automotive Investment Organisation (AIO) and Mike Matthews, Managing Director of Nifco UK, whilst some of the region’s major automotive companies will host take part in the ‘meet the buyer’ sessions.

The North East Automotive Expo will be the region’s only event solely focused on the North East’s thriving automotive sector and it is anticipated that over 300 delegates will attend. The Expo will highlight future opportunities and challenges for the sector’s supply chain, and provide ideal networking opportunities to engage with key decision makers.

The event is aimed at both companies already working in the automotive industry and those looking to diversify or set-up in the sector. Companies will have the opportunity to meet with buyers and take part in technical workshops, whilst being able to broaden their presence at the Expo by hosting an exhibition space. Confirmed buyers to date include Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK, Nifco UK, Faltec Europe and Lear Corporation UK, with more to follow.

Paul Butler, CEO at NEAA comments on why the group is planning the Expo, “The automotive sector is a huge part of North East industry, and we see real value in hosting an industry-specific event like the North East Automotive Expo to help both our members, and other automotive supply chain companies, develop their network of contacts and business opportunities.”

Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “Sunderland is already recognised as a national automotive hub. With events such as NEAA’s Expo, we will attract leading regional, UK and overseas representatives from the automotive sector worldwide, strengthening the city and North East region’s position as a thriving area for the global automotive manufacturing and supply sector to invest and prosper. We welcome NEAA’s initiative in organising the region’s first Automotive Expo event.”

The North East region is home to over 280 automotive supply chain companies, directly employing 26,000 people with a further 141,000 being impacted by the industry. Potentially, 10,000 additional jobs could be created in the next five to 10 years.

The NEAA identified a need to develop an industry-lead cluster group to support these existing automotive companies and to attract new companies and jobs to the region. It provides a single unified voice for the North East automotive sector to key stakeholder groups, as well as promoting business excellence and providing strategic leadership to grow the industry.

Around 8,500 people in the industry are due to retire during the next five to 10 years, leaving significant skills gaps. This is one of the areas NEAA will be working to address, alongside understanding the region’s capabilities and gaps in the supply chain, carrying out benchmarking and sharing best practice, innovation and technology.

NEAA is offering membership to businesses in the sector ranging from multi-nationals to sole traders. Members will immediately benefit from the promotion of the North East automotive sector’s capabilities on regional, national and international levels and the network’s ability to connect the supply chain to business opportunities. As a member, clients will also benefit from a number of NEAA schemes designed to offer preferential insurance and energy rates.
