Naylors Gavin Black to work on transformation of historic Newcastle building

Naylors Gavin Black has won a contract to support the regeneration of one of Newcastle city centre’s most iconic buildings.

The owner of the grade II-listed former Lloyds Bank on Grey Street has instructed the building consultancy team to provide project management and contract administration services for the refurbishment of the 31,000 sq ft site.

Dating back to 1839, the four-storey sandstone building features a 91-foot frontage, an impressive double-height banking hall, mezzanine level and a full-height internal atrium.

Originally occupied by Northumberland & District Bank, the building remained in continuous banking use until Lloyds vacated last year.

The redevelopment will see the basement, ground floor and mezzanine become a high-end restaurant, with the upper floors offering potential for a range of complimentary uses, which are under consideration.

The instruction was secured by Naylors partner Scott Clarke, who will be project lead, supported by building surveyor, Luke Overton.

Internal demolition works are now underway and further announcements, including confirmation of an anchor restaurant tenant, are expected in the coming months.

Scott Clarke, partner at Naylors Gavin Black, said: “It is a privilege to be involved in the regeneration of such an important and beautiful building. The space had become underutilised by the former tenant, so this project represents an exciting opportunity to restore its character and ensure it reaches its full potential once again.”
