Benfield School was thrilled to receive a generous £1,000 donation from Houghton International and the North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA) to support its after-school STEM program.
The donation was made after Houghton International won the ‘Environmental and Sustainable SME’ Award at the Made in the North East Awards, as a gesture of appreciation.
Benfield School’s STEM program highlights the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to its students. Representatives from Houghton International and the North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA) recently visited the STEM and Robotics club to observe various student projects within the STEM club, including their participation in the FIRST® LEGO® League. The LEGO® League is an engaging and educational project requiring students to apply core STEM principles to successfully design, build, and program their robots.
The £1,000 donation will support projects like the LEGO® League, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in STEM activities that foster critical thinking and creativity.
Emma Donald, Marketing Manager at Houghton International, presented the donation to Benfield students last week. She shared her hopes for the contribution, stating, “I hope the donation will ignite interest in STEM and demonstrate to the next generation the excitement and fulfilment that a career in engineering can provide.”
She continued, “Supporting Benfield School feels particularly rewarding, given that many of our employees were once students. Now, we’re helping the school cultivate a new generation of engineers.”
“We are thankful to Houghton International for their support,” said Jorja Burrows, manager of the Club at Benfield School. She continues, “This donation will provide invaluable resources for our STEM club, helping to ignite our students’ passion for STEM.”
