The University of Sunderland’s Annual Final Year Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Project Showcase brought together 20 final-year apprentices, academic staff and employer partners from Pharmaron, Procter & Gamble, Marelli and Nissan to celebrate projects that are already making a difference within their organisations.
Engineering degree apprentices from across the North East showcased projects delivering real business impact for their employers. Developed to address genuine workplace challenges, the projects demonstrated practical engineering solutions that are helping organisations improve productivity, drive digital innovation and strengthen manufacturing performance.
Projects included Digitisation of the Static Foundry, Lean Factory Reshuffle for Laser Integration and Capacity, Process Optimisation to Improve Cycle Time and Standardising & Upgrading NIC Skid Capability. The projects highlighted the breadth of technical knowledge and practical skills apprentices have developed throughout their degree, while demonstrating how they are applying that learning to deliver measurable improvements within their organisations.
Several projects also highlighted how engineering innovation can support more sustainable manufacturing through reducing waste, improving resource efficiency and identifying opportunities to lower operational costs.
The showcase reinforced that degree apprenticeships deliver more than technical knowledge. Apprentices also demonstrated the confidence to present complex engineering solutions to employers and industry professionals, showcasing the communication and commercial awareness needed to influence decision-making and lead improvement projects throughout their careers.
