NEAA responds to Nissan’s announcement

Nissan’s announcement to cut 10% of its European workforce is part of its continual push to improve competitiveness and reflects the complex and evolving landscape facing the UK and European automotive sector.

The Sunderland plant is a beacon of automotive productivity and currently produces 38% of all UK passenger vehicle production. The move to consolidate production to one line does provide additional opportunities to secure full utilisation of the plant.

The North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA) remains committed to supporting growth and strengthening the region’s competitiveness and long term investment proposition of the region’s automotive sector. Nissan, its suppliers, and the broader automotive sector are proactively adapting to market demands, investing in efficiency, innovation, and future capability. We must continue to evolve in order to maintain our position as the UK’s leading automotive manufacturing region.

The North East is a region that benefits from a highly capable supply chain, a skilled workforce, and a strong culture of partnership. We will continue to work closely with industry partners to support growth, collaboration, and confidence across the regional supply chain as we tackle these unprecedented times.
