Nurturing Nature at Nissan Sunderland Plant: Meet Energy Infrastructure Manager Andy Barker

Introducing EV36Heroes – our new series spotlighting individuals across Nissan that are helping to power forward our EV36Zero ambition. Our first episode takes us to Nissan Sunderland Plant, where Engineering Manager Andy Barker and the engineering team, in collaboration with solar farm developer Atrato Partners, have transformed a previously barren marshland into a thriving habitat for local species.

Designed to provide a green space that, when matured, can be used to offset plant emissions, this activity has already achieved remarkable boost in biodiversity. The team has recorded a considerable increase in the variety of wildlife spotted at the site, including birds of prey, dragonflies, bats and water voles. Watch the video below to find out more and hear from Andy himself!

EV36Zero, Nissan’s blueprint for the future of automotive, combines EV and battery manufacturing with renewables, with a goal of zero emissions driving and zero emissions manufacturing. Looking forward, Andy shares that what he sees in the future is an “opportunity” for all Nissan Sunderland Plant employees to get involved in the rewilding project in particular, so that the team’s efforts are maintained in the long term, complementing the wider EV36Zero ambition.

While diverse wildlife and thriving habitats may not be the first thing associated with a car manufacturing plant, their existence at Nissan Sunderland is an example of the diversity and social commitment Nissan is cultivating through EV36Zero.
