Q and A with Megan, Junior Engineer at Sunderland-based automotive manufacturer Unipres

Meet Megan. She’s working with new technology and advancing through the company!

Tell us about your career so far…

When I left school, I decided I wanted to go straight into a hands-on job, so I applied for an apprentice maintenance technician role at Unipres. Once I qualified, I applied for an HNC apprenticeship which I passed and have since been promoted to Junior Engineer. I am now studying for a degree in Electrical Engineering with the aim to keep progressing in my Unipres career.

Why did you choose to go into the advanced manufacturing sector?

The industry is ever evolving and it’s very fast paced.

With every new car model that comes out, new technology is brought in – I find that really exciting.

Tell us about your role…

There are two sides to my role – automation and new model. On the new model side, I’m working with the rest of the team on installation and commissioning of new cells, which is fascinating. In automation, I am responsible for finding processes to automate in the factory and I am helping to make our technology and robots more efficient.

There are different roles for people to choose from, there is the press shop and the assembly shop I am constantly being exposed to new technologies which I love and I’m playing an important role in building the new models of car that Unipres supplies parts for.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining the manufacturing sector?

I would say go for it – absolutely!

There are so many different roles that you can do within the industry. With the large amount of factories in North East England focusing on specific parts of a car or machine, there are loads of different companies you could join, all with their own specialities.

Why do you think the manufacturing sector in the North East is such a good industry to work in?

I like the fact that there are many manufacturing companies working in the supply chain for Nissan who come together to deliver the final product. There are loads of different specialties across the sector so there really is an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

Megan is making it. You can too.
