Meet Nakul, an Engineering Intern at Ford Aerospace, an award-winning business specialising in the machining and pressing of components and assemblies for high-tech industries. Here’s his story…
Tell us about your background…
I am originally from Bengaluru in India, and I came to the UK to do an MSc in Automotive Engineering at Coventry University. Towards the end of my course, I started searching for work opportunities and came across an engineering internship with Ford Aerospace which looked like it would be a great fit for me.
Prior to working for Ford Aerospace, I’d completed a short placement for another company in India. It was a good experience, and it also helped me to find out more about what working in the manufacturing industry would be like.
Why did you choose to work in advanced manufacturing?
A lot of my studies focused on CAD and analysis software but, as much as I was becoming skilled software wise, I also really wanted to put what I learned into practice. This – combined with a desire to further understand processes and products better, and getting to understand the life cycle of a product from drawing to completion – is what made me choose advanced manufacturing.
How have you developed in your career so far?
My career is still very much in its infancy but being able to apply the knowledge I learned during my studies and working on the projects at Ford Aerospace is helping me to develop my skills. I also really enjoy the opportunities I get to work with the different departments in the company and with our partners in the US.
I have also grown in confidence since beginning my role at Ford Aerospace.
What are the biggest benefits of working in advanced manufacturing?
Definitely being exposed to manufacturing processes! Even if I don’t directly work on a process, I do get exposed to it, allowing me to fully understand the different areas of manufacturing and machinery.
Also, the skillsets within the business. Working with colleagues with varying levels of experience allows you to pick things up from them and that improves your own approach. They help you look at things in a different way and learn on the job.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Getting to work across different aspects of the business and on multiple projects is the best thing. No two days are the same! Also, the people I work with are amazing: everyone being so helpful and supportive makes it a great work environment.
What advice would you give to someone in South Tyneside who is looking at a career in advanced manufacturing?
I would say the skills you develop in this sector will benefit you throughout your career. Try learning different skills and take the opportunities that come your way!
Learning from other people in the industry, working within a team and understanding the processes within the business will all help you to thrive.
It might seem daunting at first but once you get into the job, you will pick things up and people will be there to help you out.
Nakul is making it. You can too.
