The Power of Apprenticeships: Liam Wilson’s Story

Liam Wilson, a Maintenance Engineer at Marelli Interiors UK, started his career journey in 2015 as an operator apprentice. After transitioning to the tooling department and completing a 5-year HNC, he is now further developing his skills through a degree apprenticeship at Sunderland University.

Can you tell us about your background and how you became interested in the automotive sector?

I became interested in the automotive sector thanks to my dad’s long-term career in it, starting at Marelli back when it was Calsonic Exhaust Systems in Washington, now over 40 years ago. He has since retired, but his commitment is what sparked my interest.

What were some initial challenges you faced when you first started as an apprentice, and how did you overcome them?

Initially, returning to an education environment was challenging, as I was a few years older than the rest of the class. However, I soon realised that this wasn’t an issue, and I used my extra experience to my advantage with assignments and supporting my peers.

What skills did you learned in your apprenticeship that you’re most proud of?

Although I have gained a lot of technical skills in toolmaking and maintenance, I truly believe my interpersonal skills have flourished the most, being able to communicate all manner of information confidently and effectively. I have made a great deal of friends throughout my apprenticeship, driving me out of my comfort zone at times.

Could you describe a specific project or task you worked on that helped you grow or develop your skills?

One specific project that I am proud to be involved in is the introduction of a new computerised maintenance management system at Marelli. I have been the main point of contact and driver for the introduction of this system, being one of the first Marelli factories in the world to adopt it. This has been incredibly challenging, but has developed my understanding in how vital maintenance management systems are, as well as how powerful they can be.

What role did your colleagues play in your development as an apprentice?

My colleagues played a massive role, whether they realise it or not. As I am quite an inquisitive person, they are always willing to answer any questions I may have. I can only thank them for their willingness to educate and pass knowledge on. The ability to make my own decisions and think on my feet has developed my confidence in ways I never would have expected.

Have your career goals changed at all since you began your apprenticeship to now?

When I started my apprenticeship, my goal was to be a hands-on expert, however my aspirations have changed to be a leader, supporting and driving a team to success within the sector.

How do you see your career progressing after completing your apprenticeship?

I believe my career will continue to flourish after my apprenticeship, and I will confidently apply for progression opportunities within Marelli. I will never stop learning.

Are there any specialised areas of the automotive industry you’re particularly interested in exploring in the future?

I would love to explore electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles in the future – if this is the way the industry is heading, then it’s vital to gain a strong understanding of it.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in the automotive/advanced manufacturing field?

My advice would be to simply go for it, it’s a great way to develop not only your technical skills but also develop your character. You will be put under pressure at times; however, this only makes you a better individual at the end of it.
